Dark sat in the back of his host's mind. Okay, not his host at the moment anyway. How about, his vessel?  He was just waiting, right there, able to take over as soon as this young mind saw a glimpse of his love. Dark had way more experience in something as deep and complicated as love. He was much, much older then most of the innocent people he now lived around. But, that was just what made everything more fun.

"Hey.... Dark?" Daisuke was talking to him. He probably looked a little insane standing all alone talking to the open air. But that was Daisuke's thing. Looking funny.

"Yeah?" echoed Dark from inside.

At that moment Daisuke tripped, barely catching himself. "AAhhh! Ow..."

"HahaHAH!" Dark rang in Daisuke's mind. "You really are clumsy."

"Heey.. It's not my fault." Daisuke looked behind him to see what made him come face to face with the pathway. "what the-" It was shinning gray feather.

Dark exploded with laughter. He really did find anything foolish Daisuke did to be particularly hilarious.

"I just-" Started Daisuke as he picked up the peculiar thing. "I thought I saw someone flying over."

Dark gasped, he knew exactly what this was, and it made him strangely nervous.

"Um, Dark? Do you know what this is?" Daisuke turned it in his unknowing young fingers.

"Shizuka...."  Dark seemed to whisper. Just a name... But it gave Daisuke a hint of what Dark's thoughts were. This feather obviously belonged to someone he had at the very least, encountered in the past.

"Shizuka? Who's that?"

Dark was silent for a moment. "Well.. She's just, uhh. An old friend.."

"Just an old friend? Like Crad? But I thought it was only you and him." Daisuke tried to understand as he stood back on his feet and brushed himself off.

"Well yes. Your mostly right there... But Shizuka is a variation of what we are."

Daisuke stood to his feet and continued on,  "A variation? Of what?"

"Of us Daisuke. Me and Crad. I am the good, and he is the evil. My other half."
Daisuke turned the feather in his fingers. "But.. What does that make her?"

"She's both. Good and evil combined. A perfect yet dangerous combination."

A sudden gust of wind threw the feather off and up into the distance. Daisuke reached for it, but to no avail. Then, there was a muffled thud from behind.

"Hello Dark." Said a distinct silvery voice from around the corner.

Daisuke turned abruptly to see a winged girl. She had silvery hair, and pearly eyes. Her face was young, and she practically glowed in the moonlight. But her peculiar smirk, was the most curious of all.

"It's her!" Cried Dark. It quite surprised him. Was she an enemy?

"What a cute little person you have found to live in. Even better then the last one!" Shizuka giggled and ruffled her wings. Her laughter was innocent yet sinister. "That is quite a full head of read hair you have there young man!"

"She can recognize you!?" Dark demanded.

"What??" Poor Daisuke seemed to be caught in the middle of some fight or something. He was at a loss for words, and they both seemed to be demanding answers from him.

"Ohh come on. I recognize him from the last time. He looks just like his adventurous little Grandpa." Shizuka's face suddenly went straight. "But I'm not here just to see you Mousey."

Mousey?! The sudden confusing mood seemed to become grave, which made the confusion all that much greater.

"Daisuke." Dark sounded less flustered and more serious now. "Please. I need to talk to her."

Daisuke knew what he meant. So he pulled out the picture of the adorable Miss Hirata, and let Dark take charge.

"Yes Shizuka?" Dark's serious voice now rang in the cool night instead of the containment of Daisuke's mind. The cold dense air seemed to be creating the intensity of the mood from right there in the road way where there were both standing. The night set off an eerie glow, and a slight misty fog seemed to drift by.

"Don't let your guard down mousey. Or at least.... Not tonight." Shizuka's hair flew in the late night wind, causing her her tense face to seem full of worry.

"Any why would that be Miss?" Dark inquired. His trust to this old friend of his had been misplaced before.

Shizuka marched right up to Dark, face to face. Dark tried not to flinch. "Oh. Just a warning my dear Mousey. Don't let a sudden turn of events take you off guard." and with that, she turned and flew away.

The soft sound of her wings and her mysterious slender figure disappeared into the night, left Dark standing strangely alone.

"A warning? Maybe she does still care." Dark said as he stared off into the distance of the shinning sky. He seemed lost, and filled with old memories. But he could not remember if they were good or bad.

"Huh? What was that Dark? Who was she?" Daisuke suddenly popped back into Dark's mind and startled him. He seemed to completely forget he was there.

"Oh! Well she uhhh..." Dark's face went red. "Never mind that! What's more important is what she was warning us about!"

"Maybe we should just look around tonight." Daisuke suggested. "Just in case she's right."

"No...! We should be fine. There's nothing different about tonight. She probably just wants us to worry."

"But Dark-"

"We'll be fine!" Dark said finishing the argument. Then he transformed and put Daisuke back in charge. "You shouldn't be out this late."

Daisuke seemed to freeze right where he was standing. "OH no!" He began to run as fast as he could in the direction of home. "Mother will be furious!"

Exhaustion took a hold of Daisuke. He sat with his head lifeless on his desk staring out the school window. The drifting clouds made everything look so without worry. Could something really have happened last night? Who was that girl? Daisuke closed his eyes.

"Niwa?" Someone put a hand on his shoulder. "Are you alright?"

Daisuke snapped his eyes open and turned around suddenly hitting his knee on his desk.

"GAH! Miss Hirata! Oww.."

"Oh my... Did you get any sleep last night?" Miss Hirata's concerned face made Daisuke's exhaustion seem to briefly disappear.

"Well sort of. I couldn't really fall asleep last night." Daisuke answered vaguely. The real reason was because he could feel Dark's feelings of nervousness and and worry.

"Will you be alright Niwa? Maybe you should go home."

"Oh, no. Don't worry about me Miss Hirata. I'll be fine." Daisuke assured her with a tired smile.

"Well alright. Don't push yourself Niwa."

"Daisuke!!!" his mother called excitedly as he entered the house, throwing her arms around him. "How was school?"

"Moooom!"

"Now honey, I need you to go get ready. Phantom Dark has a job tonight."

"He does!?" Daisuke tripped as he took off his shoe barely catching himself on the wall.

"Why yes." Said Daisuke's Grandfather. "Tonight you are after the silver heart." He showed a picture of it to him in the news paper he just happened to be holding. The heart was just an insignificant looking locket.

"Of course! It's said to hold the freedom of the maiden who lost it. "

Intrigued, Daisuke was lost in the picture. The shining small heart seemed to have some sort of lost value....

"Dai!! Go get ready!"

The stars were barely beginning shinning. A navy blue and purple seemed to be the focus of the sky, and created a serene mood. But what was going to happen under this sky tonight? Daisuke continued to stare off into the distance as he somehow convinced himself that he should be used to this kind of adventure by now.

Daisuke let out a short sigh from where he was sitting in the balcony of his room.
"Ready?" Asked Dark.

Daisuke paused, then he lifted himself onto the railing. Within a second, Daisuke could feel the black wings carrying them off.

"Ahahah!" Dark did a mid-air flip and a side turn. "Wow, I really do need to get out more."

"Careful Dark! Where are we going?"

"No need to worry Daisuke. Hahah, we're on our way to someone's house."

"Who's house? Why would it be there?"

"Someone familiar actually-" Dark was cut off when a huge beam off light knocked him right out of the sky interrupting the fun Dark was having.

They were suddenly plummeting and Daisuke could tell by the sudden darkness and stillness that Dark wasn't breathing. Something was wrong. This had never happened before. What was going on?

"Dark! What is it!? Dark wake up!"

The darkness was still. The calmness and silence betrayed what was actually happening. "Dark!" Daisuke tried to take control but it was no use. How could he possibly wake up Dark like this? How long had they been like this? "Daaark Please! DARK!"

"Ahhh!" Dark was back. But they were still falling. Still plummeting.

"Dark!!"

"I know! I know!" Dark angled himself so that they soared over the ground at the last second. But his wing caught on something and they were somehow spiraling downwards again. A cliff quickly approached and was quickly gone. It was happening so fast.

KerSplash!

The water had caught them.

Sploosh! Sploosh! The beam off light continued to shoot at them as they swam back to the surface. It took all of Dark's strength as he furiously fought the gravity beneath the surface.

Gasp! Dark was breathing hard.

"What was that?!" Daisuke was surprised beyond reason.

KaSploosh! "I don't know. But we need to find it."

Dark swam as quickly as he could back to the shore. His wings heavy and wet.
He looked all around, turning his head in every direction in a desperate attempt to find the attacker.  Who was this unseen enemy?

Bwoosh! Bwoosh!

They were shooting blindly. "Show yourself!" Dark demanded from the emptiness above.

A slim figure darted across the sky, then landed only a few yards away. What was Shizuka doing here?

"Well Dark. I would have thought my warning would have prevented this meeting."
Dark was breathing hard. " Well miss. You know I can't just leave a maiden's heart to be left all alone."

"Ha ha. Very funny Dark. I seem to remember just the opposite." Shizuka fired another beam of light. It exploded just behind them off of the cliff wall.

"Daisuke, we need to get up this cliff." Dark said quietly as he could see Shizuka was preparing for another assault.

"Alright. But why are you telling me?"

Dark chuckled, and suddenly Daisuke was back in charge.

"Is this your way of running again Dark?" Shizuka roared and began firing in every direction.

Daisuke started clambering up the cliff side as fast as he could. "Dark!" Why did he decide to change? Oh well. Daisuke could do this without his help. So he kept going.

KRaKOOM! Rain suddenly broke lose from the sky and climbing became almost impossible. Hand hold, foot hold.  There was no giving up. Daisuke didn't need any help from that jerk.

"Face me Dark!" Shizuka seemed to be in a angry frenzy above.

He had finally made it to the top. But he was more exhausted then ever. What now? Where was the locket? Where should he go? Daisuke tried to think fast.

He looked around, his heart pounded hard in his chest. But... How was he HERE?

"Niwa! Is that you?!" Miss Hirata was calling down from a window. Somehow he had ended up at the Hirata house.

"M-Miss Hirata!!" What! Where was Shizuka? Was this the house Dark mentioned?

"Niwa what are you doing out there?! Come inside!"

"Uh-ok..." The rain continued to fall, and Daisuke cautiously but quickly  entered into the house. Miss Hirata was there to open the door. "I'm so sorry." Apologized Daisuke, although he was too worried to think about that right now.

"Quiet! Riku's asleep! What were you doing out in the rain?"

Daisuke hesitated... He was in Miss Hirata's house! This late at night. What was he supposed to do?

"Oh well. We'll just get you dried off. Go on into the living room, I'll get you a towel."
She was so cute! It was too much!

Daisuke was glad she was gone now, because out came Dark.

"HaHAH! Well this is awkward...." Dark murmured to himself. "And a little sudden if I must say."

"Oh come oon! Dark we need to get out of here!" Would Dark just do something useful already?

"I guess your right little man." Sighed Dark as he walked over to the sliding door and opened it. "I hate to leave such company though," and they soared up into the sky.

Flap................. Flap......  It was so silent all of a sudden... Was shizuka gone?

"Ah! Here we are." They softly landed on the roof of the Hirata house. More calm then ever, Dark slowly walked through the fog to one particular spot in the roof. There lied the locket. All alone.

"There you are Dark." Shizuka said. She was standing not far off. Something wasn't quite right with her. She seemed to be very sad.

Dark picked it up, and he held it gently in his hand. "Such a small thing."

Shizuka glared. "I can't let you do this Dark." She looked like she was about to fire.

"Perhaps not. But it must be done." Dark gently clicked open the small heart. "No matter how big or small, a heart should not be closed up or abandoned."

Slowly, a silver fog billowed out from the locket and floated to where Shizuka was.

"But... How? No one could ever unlock it before! The key was nowhere to be found! Even after all my years of searching!"

"There was no key..." Dark went on... "There was no key or other object in this world that could unlock this for you. All you needed was someone who was willing."

A strange peace seemed to spread over the lost girl's face. Shizuka slowly closed her eyes as she began to fade. "That simple huh?"

The rain began to grow lighter and lighter. "Well... I'm thankful....For you Dark."

And she was gone, with a grateful smile. No longer alone.

Dark suddenly fell to his knees.

"Are you alright!?" Demanded Daisuke.

"Heheh..." Dark stood and jumped down back by the sliding door of the living room. "Don't worry about me... You have a young girl in there worrying about you."

"Miss Hirata!" Daisuke burst back through the door into the living room.

"Niwa! Where did you go?! I called your mom and she said not to worry! What-"

"Sorry Miss Hirata... Thank you for the help."

"Hahah.. No problem Niwa. Why don't you come inside?"

But now there was one thing Daisuke did know. No one could ever learn everything about the Phantom Dark.
