Metal Lyrics Chapter 4

Rei was skipping and trotting all over the road, and Ming and I walked awkwardly side by side.

"Yay! A mission!" Rei exclaimed while at the same time tripping and rolling back onto his feet.

"Is he always like this?"I asked Ming. We were making our way to town.

"Yes... He is.. and it's a whole nother story when I actually lose him."

Ming and her brother had a foreign look to them. Ming had big black eyes and wild black hair, she tried to keep it back but it seemed to deny any form of containment. She had an understanding smile and looked about twelve years old. She wore an overcoat that looked similar to her brother's.

Rei looked a lot like her too when he wasn't so excited. His bright yellow eyes usually looked like they were closed, he wore a purple shirt with an overcoat, and tan baggy pants. Rei had longer hair then Ming and he kept it a pony tail, and his wild bangs exploded in his face.

"So where are you guys from?" I asked Ming out of curiosity.

"Our family used to live in Dublith, but... Now we're separated and brother and I just travel around."

I nodded still a little confused.

"We are half Xingese though. Mother was from Xing and father was from here. So we get mistaken for foreigners a lot."

"Oh I see." At that moment, Rei suddenly popped up next to me.

"Hiyah! Can I try on your hat thingy?" Before I could answer, he grabbed it right off my head and put it on. I didn't really mind but my ears were suddenly cold.

"Got any friends?" Rei looked pretty odd in my bomber hat with his look of innocence. Ming wasn't surprised by her brother's insistence.

"Uhh, a few."

"Is that a no? Aww! That hurts my feelings!"

I gave Rei a weird look. He was a strange guy, I had never met anyone who was so openly joyful.

"That's not what she said brother."

We were re-entering Rushvalley now. The business of the morning filled the crisp cool air, but the sun shone just enough to keep the air comfortable. Rushvalley was named perfectly, it was in an enormous valley surrounded by grand rocky mountains and cliffs. The city also always seemed to be in a rush.

"Well you're my friend! and WOW your hat thing is so sooooft!" Rei nearly tripped again when the hat covered his eyes.

"Let me see it brother!" Ming jumped to grab it, but when she failed Rei handed it to her.

"Ooh! Pretty!" Ming put it on and smiled up at me.

I envied her. Even though she basically didn't have a family either, she had her brother. He looked after her and kept her company. But I had abandoned my two brothers, and traveled alone. I had no intention of going back.

Rei was instantly in my face again. He seemed to be peering into my mind. "Whatcha thinking about?"

The question surprised me. "Oh it's uh.. Nothing."

Rei raised an eybrow. "I see."

Ming handed my hat back to me and I slipped it on.

   "That's boring."

  I looked at him.

  "What?! I get curious!"

"Brother! Shh!" Ming pointed to a big sign that said 'Atalier Garfeild' With a big purple rose and swirly lettering. The inside looked pretty clean and pretty much like a regular automail shop. Except, it was oddly adorned with fancy little things.

"Mr. Garfield!! Mr. Garfieeelllld!" Rei was calling for him all around the shop.

"Heyyy there Rei!" Mr. Garfield chimed out from his backroom. His exotic style seemed to changed the mood of the room. He was muscular, I gave him that much. But with his pink frilly apron, and odd feminine like face, I didn't know what to make out of him.

"Oh and Ming Dear! I see that you brought a friend!"

"This is Li sir." Said Ming politely.

"Oh Li! Nice." His manly figure almost seemed to sparkle, but the sparkles were probably to afraid to shine. "So why are all you kids here? Need a fix up job? Come in for parts? How Can I help you?"

He was looking at me when he asked all his questions. He could probably tell that I was the one with automail. It took a moment to compose myself before I could answer.  "We're here to pick up Mr. Dominic's supplies." I didn't know if I should be scared or laugh.

"Ah! An errand run, I see...." Mr. Garfield strode into the backroom and then carried out a good sized cardboard box. He set it down on the counter with a clank.

"Whooah! What's in it?" Asked Rei leaning over to look.

"Oh just some metal parts, tools, and stuff like that." Said Mr. Garfield obviously just summarizing.

"Oh." Rei seemed disappointed.

"Let's go." Said Ming, suddenly ready to go.

Rei heaved up the big box with difficulty.

"Come back soon and get some discount maintenance!" Called Mr. Garfield as we unexpectedly left in a hurry.

"Thank you!" Ming called back.

As soon as we had left, I said, "Wow! That guy's a real fruit cake!"

Ming laughed, "AHEM.. No kidding!"

"wait.." Rei struggled with the box. "What?"

"Nothing," I said stifling a giggle.

"Got it brother?" Ming asked.

"Yes! Yes I do.." He seemed offended to have helped offered to him. "We should hurry back. I need lunch!"

                          ~*~                ~*~                  ~*~

When we got back, I sat in the living room on the sofa and worked on creating a silver cherry blossom for my trinket collection. Ming and Rei were busy helping Mr. Dominic in the back room, but I was content sitting alone.

While I was shaping the petals I got lost in my mind. Was I really going to see Aunt Gracia? The thought made me nervous. I remembered from childhood that she was probably the sweetest person I had ever met. Her daughter was probably just like her too... Or maybe she would be like Maes.

If I did  go, I would have to take the train, and I didn't have money yet, and staying with Mr. Dominic would prolong my debt to him.

I shook my head, I was definitely not going to accept any more charity. I was the last person that should be offered such kindness... and if I went to Gracia's, the kindness would never end.

I was invited though...

"Crap." I set the flower down and sighed. Maybe I should go door to door again for work, I always could get good money for that.

"Are you alright?" Rei was standing over me at the end of the sofa. His face looked intensely sincere. I didn't think he was capable of it. But I hated the look of sympathy in his eyes.

I quickly picked up my project and put it in the box with the others. "Me? Heheh, of course."

Rei put the rag he was holding down on the coffee table and sat next to me. I didn't like it. In my mind I liked the attention but I just wanted him to go away. I was used to being alone, why should that change?

"Hey.. I know we just met, but you don't have to lie to me."  The kindness in his voice took me off guard. It made me wish that people would just stop worrying about me.

I folded my hands together and listened to the creaking of my metal fingers as they intertwined. I bowed my head so that I wouldn't have to look him in the eye. Why was he here?  just wanted him to leave, but at the same time, my heart felt like it was going to burst.

Rei waited in silence, and I failed to organize my thoughts. I couldn't find anything to say, what was I supposed to say?

"You're used to being alone aren't you?" They way he said it, it seemed like he was asking himself the question.  "You think you deserve it. You always think to yourself that you're no good anyways. All that you do is mess up everyone else's lives and should just stay away."

My eyes widened and I gazed up at him. He was just leaning back staring into the distance.

"But no matter how much you punish yourself, there's no redemption."

His words hammered my hidden guilt deeper into my heart. So I turned my gaze and continued to hide my emotions. "Do you have a point?" I asked. What was he getting at?

Rei laughed nervously, it made me uncomfortable. "I guess I'm.... Just trying to say that it's impossible to change the past. Move on, make a difference, make people smile. You actions will speak louder then the words you are incapable of finding."

It was silent for a moment and I realized that he was right.

Rei stood and stretched. "But of course...  Heheh, my advice could just be pointless blabber." He said and turned to walk away.

"No." I stopped him by rushing to put my hand on his shoulder. But when he turned to look at me I hid my face in my hair and put my arms behind my back. "No.... Thanks, I needed to hear that."  Ah! Crap I'm crying!

Without a word, Rei hugged me. At first he took me off guard, and I didn't know what to do. But when I welcomed his hug I felt relief for the first time in a long time.

When he let go all I could do was kinda laugh.

"I knew we were friends!" Rei said suddenly switching to his puppy-like self again. Then he picked up his rag again and left.
